Canon RF 24-70 f/2.8, 28-70 f/2 or 24-105 f/4 — which one?
18 August 2026

If you shoot Canon mirrorless, the standard zoom is the lens that spends most of its life on the body. There are three sensible choices, and they differ more than the specifications suggest.
Every price below was read from our catalogue when this page was written, and all three are available to rent today.
The part that surprises people
The most expensive one is the cheapest to rent. Canon RF 28-70mm f/2L USM costs 39 990 SEK new — 46% more than the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM at 27 390 SEK — but four days costs 1 694 SEK against 1 788 SEK.
That is not a mistake. We set the daily rate as a share of replacement value, inside a band that runs from 3.5 to 6 per cent for professional-class equipment. The 28-70 sits at 3.50 % — the floor of that band — and the 24-70 at 5.68 %, near the ceiling. Two legal prices in one corridor, at opposite ends. If you are buying, it makes no difference. If you are renting, it is the whole difference.

28-70 f/2 — the one that should not work
A zoom at f/2 throughout did not exist until Canon built one. It gives you roughly a stop more light and noticeably softer backgrounds than an f/2.8, across the whole range — which in practice means it replaces three fast primes in the bag.
- It weighs a little over 1.4 kg. You notice after a day handholding.
- It starts at 28 mm, not 24. Indoors in tight rooms those four millimetres are a real loss.
- No stabilisation. With a stabilised body that matters less.
Rent it if you shoot portraits, events or weddings indoors and want f/2 without changing lenses halfway through.
24-70 f/2.8 — the one that always works
Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM is 27 390 SEK new and 1 788 SEK for four days. It has stabilisation, it starts at 24 mm, it weighs less, and it does everything well without doing anything extreme. That is why it is the most rented standard zoom we hold.
Rent it if you are taking one lens and do not know exactly what the day will ask for.
24-105 f/4 — the underrated one
Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM is 13 990 SEK new, 1 276 SEK for four days, and covers a range the other two cannot approach. You pay for it with a stop of light.
Rent it if you are travelling, documenting or filming and would rather not change lenses than have f/2.8.
In short
- Light and background matter most: the 28-70 f/2 — and it is the cheapest of the three to rent.
- One lens for everything: the 24-70 f/2.8.
- Reach and weight matter most: the 24-105 f/4.
Rent it before you decide
A weekend with the lens on a real shoot tells you more than any comparison, including this one.
