Rent or buy?
The question is rarely whether the equipment is worth the money. It is how many days a year you actually use it. Here is the arithmetic at today’s prices: what the equipment costs new, what it costs to rent, and how many rentals fit inside the purchase price.
On average the purchase price is worth 16 rentals of 4 days. Use the equipment once a year and you will have paid for the camera in 16 years — by which point it is several generations old.

Equipment in stock right now, most expensive first. The rental price is for one unit without add-ons and is recalculated when you change the length.

When you should buy instead
There are three cases where we would tell you to buy.
- You use it more than a couple of weeks a year. The rentals catch up with the purchase price, and owning becomes cheaper.
- You need it without warning. We hold one of most things — if it is booked, it is booked, and a freelancer who has to be able to say yes on Tuesday cannot rely on that.
- It is your main tool. A lens you shoot with every week is one you should own, and preferably own two of.
If you buy, you can sell on, and that part is not in the table. Lenses hold their value well; bodies fall faster and are outrun within a few years. Expect to get some of the purchase price back — but not to avoid the difference.
